of R/C Surfing
Since surfing began, many surfers worldwide have often stared in amazement at perfect little waves breaking along their local beach or point and sometimes thought to themselves "if only those waves were bigger or if only I was smaller these waves would be perfect". During the summer of 1981 Australia's South East Coast experienced a severe wave drought where the surf did not exceed ½ m for over 2 months. It was during this period that a surfer by the name of Jason Hall started experimenting with his hand made remote controlled model boats in the rockpool at his local beach. Several of Jason's friends were watching in amusement, but this amusement quickly turned to boredom after just a few minutes. Craving some action the attention quickly turned to the small surf. Although a bit reluctant at first, Jason decided to give it a go. Drawing upon his surfing experience, Jason manouvered the tiny boat out through the channel and instinctively headed towards some tiny little waves. Much to everyone's excitement the tiny boat accelerated onto the face of a small wave, turned to the left, and stayed in front of the curl. After catching a few waves a heavy "wipeout" onto the shoreline brought the show to a end ..but not for long!! A fitter/machinist by trade, and having years of surfboard building experience behind him, Jason continued to experiment with his radio controlled "surfboats" until Spring 1983. Dissatisfied with the aesthetics and performance of the boats, Jason designed and built his first radio-controlled model surfer. The surfing performance of the first prototype was slow, however it now demonstrated the unique ability to "self-right". This now allowed the operator to remain on the shore after a wipe out. Encouraged by this, Jason continued to improve the design of the model and in 1995 founded "Wombarra Innovations Pty Ltd". Patents were applied for in 1997 and in 2000 an agreement was signed and the Kyosho Corporation of Japan under a liscenced agreement introduced the radio controlled surfer to the world. |
